Color perception is solely a function of the degree to which these cells are active, and this is why it is sufficient for monitors to contain only these hues. Considerable processing takes place in the retina, as evidenced by the fact that the rods and cones outnumber the ganglion cells, which feed into the optic nerve by a ratio of approximately 10 to 1. The bipolar cells are sensitive either to small patches of light with the surround off, or vice versa. The net effect of this is to highlight edges; thus, well before visual information reaches the brain proper, objects in the visual field have begun to be segregated from their neighbors and the background.

Signals from the retina are routed through the optic disk in the eye and meet at the optic chiasma. There they are separated into two streams, with the right part of the retina from both eyes joining on the right, and likewise for the left retinal image. As with any lens, however, the eye reverses the image before it is projected onto the retina at the back of the eye. Thus, the right optic tract, (the optic nerve post-chiasma) actually contains signals from the left visual fields for both eyes, and the left optic tract contains signals from the right visual field.
