We thus implemented a software simulator using PIN [13] to validate our technique. Our approach introduces additional debug registers attached to each core, which each consist of one memory address field and one size field (in bytes) for a shared data element. The registers are used to configure a performance counter to only count events with accesses to a specified memory location; the data size – if greater than zero – expands a 18 J. Schimmel and V. Pankratius filter to a contiguous memory region.
