The seaplane’s crew was led by Oberleutnant Hans Kurz, with Oberfeldwebel Hans Sost being the pilot. They were killed on 17 December when CM+IT hit a ship’s mast while taking off from Syracuse harbour, bound for North Africa with a cargo of fuel (H Thürling) A complete formation of 14 six-engined Me 323s, each carrying 12 tonnes of fuel or ammunition, was wiped out off Cape Bon on 22 April. The only rescue action undertaken from the air was by Fieseler Storchs dropping one-man dinghies, and questions were asked about the absence of the Seenotdienst (Luft).

One flying boat returned to base with 19 Italian sailors on board. At this point, however, a B-24D Liberator of the USAAF’s 1st Antisubmarine Squadron arrived on the scene. Whilst on a patrol mission from its base at Protville 1, in Tunisia, its crew sighted three seaplanes on the water, which were thought to be PBYs at first. The debriefing report continues; ‘Crew sighted a few miles away about 200 survivors in life vests in the water, in lifeboats, in wreckage and on orange and black life rafts.

On 19 October 1943 the merchantman Sinfra, carrying some 2400 prisoners in its hold, as well as 204 Germans, was sunk by USAAF B-25 Mitchells and RAF Beaufighters some 19 miles to the north of Souda Bay. The ship sent an SOS saying ‘Save German troops first’. That day, 566 men were rescued, including 163 Germans, but more than 2000 drowned. During the rescue operations a Do 24 from Souda Bay was strafed by Beaufighter Xs of No 603 Sqn. The Dornier was taken in tow by a support boat, but the seaplane sank before reaching its base.
