At 53, Gandhi was again thrown in jail. He served two years of a six-year term. When he came out, he decided to devote his energies to improving the relationship between Hindus and Muslims. In 1945, the British government decided to divide India into two states. India would be for Hindus, and Pakistan would be for Muslims. Gandhi disagreed with this idea. Months of violence followed as the process of splitting the two countries took place. Gandhi wanted to promote peace between the warring religions.

The AWOC members were too angry to wait, however. The strike would have gone ahead anyway, with or without the NFWA. Dolores and César reasoned that they should do all they could to help their Filipino friends.
