Generally, therefore, we witness a divide between inhumation in the Neolithic period and cremation in the Bronze Age. As regards inhumation, knowledge of bodily decomposition rates in various soil types, in particular clay or waterlogged soils where decomposition would be slow, were certainly known from at least the Neolithic period,4 and so we might expect to find areas of poorer soil types void of burials. If not, bodily preservation could have occurred, or at least a delayed decomposition, and given the specific burial rites evident from the period this could have caused problems.

And the final way to create a vampire involves incorrect practice of rituals and burial rites. This last method is the one most prevalent in prehistoric cultures. Mentioned earlier was the act of placing stones on top of a grave to help ‘contain’ the dead, and evidence of these cairns are apparent in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages across Europe. 2 Examples in the Peak District of Derbyshire tend to be smaller and with a simpler structure, such as those at Beeley, Barbrook, Glutton and Eyam Moor. Cairns are remarkably similar in shape and composition to round barrows and often the two types merge.

The foundations of this modern vampire. They were themselves derived from earlier fears and obsessions with demons, spirits and death. Indeed, a possible origin of the vampire is from a folkloric rendering of the Christian Cain and Abel story. Cain killed his brother Abel and so was banished; he wandered until 46 he met Lilith, the original partner of Adam, who had left Adam and become a witch. Lilith had become a mother to demons in a bargain made with the angels. She is often depicted as killing human children and showed Cain the life power of blood.
