In your conversations with other believers, have you ever made claims like these? ” Did you know that every time you say “Amen” to a truth, everything you ever accepted by faith, anything you confessed, claimed or promised and all the teaching you agreed to in your heart—all this will be tested? How do I know it will be tested? Throughout the Bible, God lets us know unmistakably that He is testing us, searching, trying, judging and examining our hearts and lives: “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind” (Jeremiah 17:10).

When we read about the birds, thorns, heat, rocky ground and good ground, we realize that the test here is a combination of external enemies and circumstances, and internal heart problems. The outside enemies and circumstances are represented by the birds that snatch the seed, the thorns that choke the plants and the intense heat that dries them up. These are the fear of persecution, cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches. External attacks are designed to sidetrack our attention from the Word of God that has been sown in our hearts and to eventually remove it altogether.

For us it may look like a small thing, yet God takes it so seriously. You know, His heart is deeply wounded when we try to fool Him and substitute our love for Him with great works instead. 49 BROKEN FOR A PURPOSE To remember means to look back at how it was at first, to compare it with now and to recognize the difference. Remembering makes us homesick. To repent means not only admitting we did wrong, but being deeply sorry with all our hearts for our condition. It includes asking for forgiveness and, by God’s grace, starting out in the right direction.
