Thus a survey of a Puerto Rican neighborhood in Jersey City found that proficiency criterion scores could be successfully predicted by a combination of variables which were maximally independent of one another (Fishman et a/. 1971). For example, almost 75o/o of the variation in respondents' Spanish repertoire range (the number and fluency of speech styles observed in Spanish, as rated by two linguists who based their j udgments on tape-recorded samples) was explained by a combination of seven predictors.
