With this move, he decided on a career in music, though he was not to immerse himself in music quickly or fully in the Eastman School of Music. More patient students stayed through graduation and went on to become their own persons anyway. The notion of placing music in a kind of straitjacket was alien to Wilder. It was much too vilifying, too far out of control to achieve any result, in my opinion. I had money in those days and offered to pay for the printing if the horn players would permit me to rewrite the diatribe.
